Rokita Calls on Weinzapfel to Support Fellow Hoosier and Supreme Court Nominee Amy Coney Barrett

Weinzapfel should ask his fellow liberals to confirm Hoosier and Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Highest Court

Former Indiana Secretary of State, Member of Congress, private sector lead attorney and Vice President for External Affairs at Apex Benefits, and Republican Nominee for Attorney General Todd Rokita today is calling on Democratic nominee for AG Jonathan Weinzapfel to ask his fellow liberals to confirm Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination in the U.S. Senate.

“Hoosier Amy Coney Barrett is a supremely qualified candidate for the nation’s highest court,” said Rokita, “She is an accomplished legal scholar, has tremendous experience from serving on the Court of Appeals and from clerking at the Supreme Court. She is someone who can do it all as a wife and mother of seven all the while earning accolades from her colleagues and students.”

“It is incredibly important that the U.S. Senate confirm this eminently qualified woman for the U.S. Supreme Court and I call on my Democratic opponent, Jonathan Weinzapfel, to ask his fellow liberals to vote and confirm her. He should urge Elizabeth Warren, Richard Blumenthal, Bernie Sanders and others who share his views to do the right thing and confirm Hoosier and Judge Amy Coney Barrett on the court.”

Judge Barrett, who lives in South Bend, is currently a federal judge sitting on the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals. She is also a law professor, teaching at Notre Dame Law School since 2002 and is alumna of the same school. Judge Barrett worked as a law clerk for Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and previously served as a law clerk for the U.S. Court of Appeals. Judge Barrett was named “Distinguished Professor of the Year” three separate times at Notre Dame, a decision made by students.

Rokita also noted, “Amy Coney Barrett is a mother to seven children, including two who she and her husband adopted from Haiti. Her youngest child has Down Syndrome. As a father to a child who also has a genetic disorder, I personally understand the love, devotion, and commitment that comes with raising a child with special needs. It is amazing to see all that she has accomplished and I look forward to her service on behalf of Indiana and nation on the Court.”
